My favourite shot from your family session won’t be the one where you’re facing and smiling at my camera.
I love the ethereal, the blurry and the out of focus. I love wispy, unkept hair, bare skin and all of your ‘flaws,’ movement and shadows. I yearn to portray truthful moments, not always the ‘technically correct’ – to me, these moments are more beautiful. My favourite light to shoot in is the 20 minutes before the sun pops over the horizon and the 10 minutes just after the sun has gone to bed. The moodier moments just before and after the oh-so-sought-after golden hour is where you will find me.
Working with families in their own home is also pretty awesome, it doesn’t matter if the sink is filled with dishes or the mat is crumpled, a real-deal shoot at a client’s home is the bomb. The babes are comfy and the kids can show me things around their house. I love looking back on images of when we first brought Banjo home, in the background I can see the pusher we used, the clothes piled on the bed because we were exhausted, the cute little blankets that my Nanna and friends knitted him and a bunch of flowers that were delivered. I like remembering that kind of stuff.
